Do I need to purchase a different DVD kit for each age level?

Yes, the DVD kit is designed for use in one classroom. If the same age-level classes are meeting at different times (i.e., second Sunday school), then the same kit could be used.

Can we use Live B.I.G. in a setting other than Sunday school?

Live B.I.G. is designed for Sunday school. It is dated curriculum beginning September 3, 2006. It can be modified to use during children's church, Sunday night services, or Wednesday evening programs.

I'm using Rotation Model. How does this compare?

Live B.I.G. is not a rotation model, but it shares some of the same excitement, ease in recruitment, and use of technology. Since many rotation models do not offer a preschool age level, Live B.I.G. could be used with preschoolers while elementary children are involved in rotation. Tweens also like to "do something different." Live B.I.G. could engage your tweens in Sunday school in a new and different way.

Can Live B.I.G. be used in a large-group/small-group setting?

Live B.I.G. was not developed as a large-group/small-group curriculum, but all age levels use the same themes each month to study their Bible verses. The Bible verses will vary by age level for age appropriateness, but the music could be used for a large-group assembly. The One BIG Room age level might also be adapted to large-group/small-group.

What do I need to use Live B.I.G.?

You will need one TV and DVD player per classroom. You will then need to purchase one DVD kit per age level and one Kids' Books (or Student Guide) per child. For subsequent quarters, Leader's Guides and Kid's Books/Student Guides will need to be purchased.

For a small number of children of varying ages, One BIG Room may be used. One BIG Room includes all DVDs needed for one year. The Leader's Guide includes activities for children ages 3-13, as well as reproducible sheets for the children. A Leader's Guide will need to be purchased for subsequent quarters.

Do you plan to create a Live B.I.G. type program for teens?

Yes. Claim the Life, the new, comprehensive youth curriculum for Sunday school, will be available July 2007. The new resources focus on spiritual formation, understanding, and discipleship. The teaching plans emphasize the 4 Rs: Relationships (with God and with one another as Christians), Rigor (the six-year plan helps youth understand and claim the faith), Relevance (SMART goals give youth a way to make the learnings from the lesson meaningful in their own lives), Ritual (names the time together as sacred).

The scope of Claim the Life is six years, "From Confirmation to Graduation": Year One: Journey, Year Two: Word, Year Three: Faith, Year Four: Promise, Year Five: Story, Year Six: Call. The first three years are specifically for younger youth; the next three, specifically for older youth. However, classes with combined age levels will be able to use the materials successfully, especially since each week has two teaching options.

Each lesson revolves around a single key word (or phrase) significant to claiming life as a Christian—words such as Commitment, Suffering, Simplicity, Blessing, Peace, Abundant Life, Humility, Abstain, Humility, Fruitful, to name only a few of the 192 in the six-year plan. Each lesson has two teaching options—“one big thing” (task or experience) or a discussion starter.

As with Live B.I.G., media plays a significant role in the class experience:

  • Five video vignettes each semester
  • Images and PowerPoint presentations
  • Links to music

The included CD-ROM/web components give teachers supplemental materials for each lesson, including additional background, tie-ins to various traditions, plus teaching tips, articles, demonstrations, and much more.

Another unique benefit of Claim the Life is being able to stay in touch with youth and parents during the week. This e-mail feature provides youth with additional learning, encouragement, and accountability during the week. An additional e-mail gives parents suggestions for things to do and things to talk about with their son or daughter related to the lesson. Parents will be more supportive of getting their youth to Sunday school regularly because they know more about what the youth are learning.
